What is an Industrial Electrician?

An industrial electrician is a skilled tradesperson who installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs electrical systems in industrial environments such as factories, manufacturing plants, refineries, warehouses, and processing facilities.

They work with high‑voltage equipment, complex machinery, and automated control systems that keep production running safely and efficiently.

These instruments feed data to control systems so operators can make decisions or automate processes.

What are the roles and responsibility an Industrial Electrician?

An Industrial Electrician has a big, high‑impact job in any plant or manufacturing environment. Their responsibilities go way beyond basic wiring — they keep entire production lines running safely, smoothly, and efficiently.

Core Roles & Responsibilities of an Industrial Electrician

1. Install & Maintain Industrial Electrical Systems

  • Set up wiring, conduit, cable trays, and power distribution systems

  • Install motors, control panels, switchgear, and transformers

2. Troubleshoot Electrical Problems

  • Diagnose issues in motors, VFDs, PLCs, relays, and control circuits

  • Use multimeters, megohm testers, and other diagnostic tools

3. Work With Industrial Machinery

  • Maintain electrical components on pumps, conveyors, compressors, and automated equipment

  • Repair motor starters, overloads, contactors, and sensors

4. Read & Interpret Technical Documents

  • Electrical schematics

  • Blueprints and wiring diagrams

  • Equipment manuals and safety documentation

5. Perform Preventive Maintenance

  • Inspect electrical systems for wear, overheating, or loose connections

  • Test breakers, fuses, and grounding systems

6. Ensure Safety & Compliance

  • Follow arc‑flash procedures and lockout/tagout (LOTO)

  • Maintain safe work practices around high‑voltage systems

7. Collaborate With Other Departments

  • Work with instrumentation techs, mechanics, and operators

  • Support production teams during shutdowns or turnarounds

  • Communicate issues clearly to supervisors and engineers
